DC 37, CITY'S LARGEST PUBLIC EMPLOYEE UNION, HAILS ELECTION VICTORIES
100% of Endorsed Candidates Win
Their Election: Non-Partisan Election Initiative Defeated
District Council 37, the city's largest public employees' union
with 125,000 members and 50,000 retirees, today hailed the victories
the union achieved in Tuesday's election.
"DC 37 is a potent political force," said DC 37 Executive
Director Lillian Roberts. "Tuesday's election results show,
once again, how this union comes through for our candidates. All
the candidates we endorsed, won their elections. We also led the
fight against the Mayor's non-partisan election initiative which
was soundly defeated."
"DC 37's well-organized, proven, sophisticated field operations
as always did an outstanding job in getting out the vote. We had
thousands of members out on the streets on Tuesday handing out
palm cards in support of our candidates and our issues. We made
tens of thousands of calls on our phone banks. We galvanized our
members through our website, union newspaper, and at our Oct.
29th "Fair Contract Now" rally at City Hall attended
by over 20,000.
"Our members not only provide city services, 85% of them
live in New York City and are consumers of those services. That's
why the city's elected officials and the issues that concern all
New Yorkers are vitally important to us. We are well known for
our political clout and yesterday's victories attest to that fact.
It is a tribute to the efforts of all our members."
DC 37's Screening Committee and Executive Board recommended all
the candidates who were then ratified by the delegate body.
